Listen to Obituary

Theresia “Resi” Barbara Scherer Mull passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at the age of 79.

Resi was born October 20, 1945, in Germany to Johann Scherer and Katharina Frey Scherer as the youngest of 4 children. Her young life was difficult, as they were refugees during the war fleeing from Romania. Her family settled and built their home in Feudenheim after the war, where Resi graduated school and completed a clerical apprenticeship. In the summer of 1962, she met Bennie Mull, a handsome American soldier in the Army, at a local festival. They began dating and fell in love despite the language barrier. They were married in her uncle’s church in Feudenheim on April 17, 1964, and began their adventure together in America, where she became a US citizen. After 6 years of military service across the country, they decided to settle in Bennie’s hometown in South Carolina, eventually ending up in Piedmont. In 1968, they welcomed their daughter Karen, and in 1979, their son Benjamin was born.

Resi worked several jobs, including Teaching German language and culture at Spearman Elementary School, working at Greenville German restaurant Haus Edelweiss, and teaching language and culture for Inlingua to prepare American adults for their work assignments abroad. She was well respected in her community and loved by those who had the opportunity to meet and work with her.

Resi was incredibly hard working, but her most personally rewarding endeavor was being a wife to Bennie, a mother to Karen and Benjamin (deceased) and grandmother to Savannah and Rachel. Resi and Bennie have shared a 61-year marriage full of love and friendship, where she dedicated all her energy to her family. However, family extended beyond blood in her eyes; Everyone she met was made to feel like family. She was lovingly known as Omi, a nickname for German grandmothers, to all who knew her. She welcomed everyone into her home, and no one ever left hungry. Whether it was through her famous bread, cakes, or meals – this is how Resi showed her love.

Resi had a truly special bond with her “girls”, Karen, Savannah, and Rachel. She was a significant part of their lives, cheering them on in every personal accomplishment and always so proud of them. She was always supportive and encouraging and pushed them to follow their dreams.

Resi is survived by her loving husband, Bennie Mull; her daughter, Karen Mull Gambrell; granddaughters, Savannah Harper Gambrell and Rachel Grace Gambrell; her sister, Inge Biedermann, and husband Ernst; Ruth Scherer, the devoted wife of her late brother, Hans Scherer; sisters-in-law, Ella Moize and Gail King; and many nieces and nephews across the United States, Germany, and Switzerland.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Johann Scherer, and Katharina Frey Scherer; her son, Benjamin Hans Mull; and her sister, Johannes Ruderisch and husband Wolfgang.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 12, 2025, at 1:00pm in the Memorial Chapel at Buncombe Street Methodist Church, 200 Buncombe Street, Greenville, SC 29673, with visitation immediately following the service.

Memorials may be sent to Samaritan’s Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607.

You have forever impacted our lives, Omi.
