Thomas Vincent Fischer, loving father to three children and four grandchildren and devoted husband of 52 years to Ann, died peacefully on October 13, 2025 at his residence at The Woodlands in Greenville, SC. He was 96 years old, and although he was afflicted in his later years with dementia, he maintained a cheerful spirit with a twinkle in his eye to the end.
Tom was born in Chicago on September 12, 1929 to John and Florence Fischer and grew up in Glencoe, a North Shore Chicago suburb, attending New Trier High School, where, in addition to being a good student, he was an avid baseball player. He went on to college at De Pauw University in Greencastle, IN and upon graduation in 1952 enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served our country as a master sergeant overseas during the Korean War. Upon returning in 1954, he enrolled at the University of Michigan Law School where he earned a JD/LLM degree in 1957. More importantly, while in Michigan, he met the love of his life, Ann Titterington of Chagrin Falls, OH, on a blind date, and they were married in September 1957. While the young couple was living in Evanston, IL and Tom was practicing law, sons John (1960) and Tom (1962) and daughter Sally (1965) were born. With Sally only a few weeks old, the family moved to Decatur, IL, where they spent their formative years and where Tom was an executive with the A.E. Staley Manufacturing Company. In 1985, Tom and Ann moved back to the Chicago suburbs, where Tom led the Mutual Trust Life Insurance Company as CEO. Upon Tom’s retirement in 1995, he and Ann relocated to Dataw Island, SC, where they enjoyed their retirement, including far-ranging travel and spending time with their grandchildren. Following Ann’s passing in 2010, Tom moved to The Woodlands in 2015, where he established many friendships.
Tom was always known as a devoted family man who was steadfast in his ethics and dependability. Generous with his time and his resources, he would instinctively “do the right thing,” while always keeping a sense of humor. Tom is survived by his three children John (and spouse Dorothy), Tom (and spouse OkKyung) and Sally (and spouse Chris), as well as four grandchildren Catherine, Emery, Julia and Sophia.
In loving memory of Thomas, whose spirit touched the lives of many, we invite family and friends to celebrate his memory through a heartfelt Tribute Tune entitled "Twinkle in His Eye."
