Trevor Norman Hanson, 91, loving husband, devoted father and proud grandfather, passed away peacefully 15 May 2025 surrounded by family. Born in Calcutta, India, to Harold and Dorothy (née Moore), he often said he grew up in a Christian household on a Muslim street in a Hindu neighborhood. After graduation from Bishop Wescott boarding school in Ranchi, he trained as a mechanical engineer, serving with the British Navy and Merchant Marine, and later with the US Coast Guard Reserve. Having lived through the Bengal Famine and partition, he settled in England after his naval service, where he continued his studies at the University of Newcastle.
It was there he met his future wife of 66 years, Mary McGurk, a nurse midwife. They lived for several years in England before emigrating to Canada, and later to America. After frequent moves in their youth, they settled finally in Greenville in 1973 with their three children, Sally, Peter & John. Trevor worked as senior piping engineer and project manager with Daniel, J.E Sirrine, and Blount engineering firms, before retiring from Fluor.
His hobbies and interests were varied, both physical and intellectual. He loved hiking & camping in the Smokey Mountains; fishing and boating on Lake Hartwell. In his youth in India he was an avid hunter, cycled throughout the subcontinent exploring different states, excelled at field hockey and soccer at school, and competed in amatuer boxing. In later years, he took a keen interest in golf, boasting of his handicap and visiting tournaments to watch the professionals. An avid reader of histories and tech advances, he volunteered with AARP and lobbied the state legislature in Columbia to keep in mind the needs of seniors. He enjoyed hosting and attending Friday poker nights with friends, and later played competitive bridge at McPherson Park.
Trevor was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Winnie, and his beloved son Peter. He is survived by his wife Mary, his daughter Sally (Roger), his son John (Robin), his grandchildren Natalie and Conor, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mary invites you to join the family in a celebration of life at their residence of 52 years, 14 Vicki Circle in Greenville, SC from 4-8pm on Friday, June 13, 2025.
