William Frederick "Fred" Moorhead Jr., a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2025, in Greenville, SC, at the age of 86. Born on July 9, 1939, to William F. Moorhead Sr. and Martha Glenn Moorhead in Anderson, SC. Fred's life was marked by dedication, service, and a warm, loving spirit that touched all who knew him.

Fred's journey began in Greenville, where he attended Augusta Circle, Greenville Junior High, and Greenville Senior High School. His commitment to excellence led him to Clemson College, where he earned a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1962. He was proud to be an Eagle Scout with Troop 99 at Westminster Presbyterian Church. His time at Clemson was further distinguished by his membership in the Numeral Society, a testament to his academic and social contributions to campus life.

Upon graduation, Fred's sense of duty called him to serve his country. He entered the Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, and was commissioned as an Ensign. His military career was highlighted by his attendance at the Navy Polaris Missile Weapons School in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and his service at the Polaris Missile Facility Atlantic in Goose Creek, SC. Fred concluded his Navy tenure with the rank of Lieutenant, carrying with him the discipline and patriotism that would define his civilian life.

After his service, Fred embarked on a successful career in textile machinery sales. For 42 years, he traveled extensively, both domestically and internationally, sharing his expertise and passion for the textile industry. His leadership skills were recognized when he served as the past Chairman of the Board of the American Textile Machinery Association in Falls Church, Virginia. Fred truly loved what he did, and he made countless friendships along the way, keeping in touch with many coworkers after retirement.

Fred's interests were as varied as they were rich. An avid outdoorsman, he found joy in woodworking, wood carving, fly fishing, fly tying, and upland bird hunting. He loved attending OLLI classes at Furman University with friends. A true Clemson Tigers fan, Fred never missed an opportunity to watch his beloved team play football, a pastime that brought him immense pleasure.

Those who knew Fred will remember him as a kind, loving, and intelligent man. His gentle demeanor and genuine interest in others earned him the respect and affection of many. Fred's legacy is carried on by his devoted wife, Helen Fortner Moorhead; his son, William Frederick Moorhead III (Amanda) of Fort Mill, SC; daughters, Gray Moorhead Spencer (John) of Hendersonville, NC, and Kelly Moorhead of Greenville, SC; grandchildren, John William Moorhead and Sarah Moorhead, both of Fort Mill, SC; and, Melanie Margaret Louise Moorhead of Greenville, SC.
