SSGT Zane Oliver Hendrix, a cherished husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away after a four week illness with bacterial meningitis, on July 28, 2025 at the age of 81 in Greenville, SC. Zane was born on May 4, 1944 in Greer, S.C. His life was a testament to his loving, kind, and selfless nature.
Zane's dedication to his family was unparalleled. He is survived by his wife, Susan Suddeth Hendrix, of 46 years, who stood by his side in love and partnership. His legacy continues through his children, Bryon Hendrix, daughters Laurie Groover(Jason) and Melissa Perez(Jason) and his step children Stephanie Epps(Jamie) and Bryan Hall. Zane's joy was multiplied by his grandchildren, Emily Wilkey(Matthew), Lauren Epps, Cameron Hall, Elizabeth and Jay Perez, Aidan Bayersdorfer, and Keenan Hendrix, and the many moments they shared together.
A patriot at heart, Zane was honored to serve his country with nine years of military service. He served in the Army in South Korea and continued his service in the Air Force as a Crew Chief and Door Gunner for two tours in Vietnam. He continued his Air Force career in Texas training pilots to work with door gunners. He ended his service with the South Carolina National Guard at Donaldson Center in a communications division. He earned numerous awards during his time in the military.
Professionally Zane was a respected Facility Technician with AT&T for 44 years. His work ethic and commitment were evident to all who worked alongside him. He volunteered to work on out of town crews to restore service in areas where there had been serious storms. Zane's colleagues will remember him not only for his professional contributions but also the camaraderie and support he provided.
Zane's interests and hobbies were a reflection of his generous spirit. He was the quintessential handyman, always ready to lend a hand or fix a problem, no matter how big or small. He was on a chainsaw crew for South Carolina Disaster Relief at Marietta First Baptist Church, where he volunteered to work in areas that had been destroyed by storms. His ability to repair just about anything was matched only by his willingness to help others. Zane was not only the best husband possible, but also the greatest friend anyone could ask for. His presence brought comfort and reliability to those in the community.
Zane's life was one of active engagement and unwavering support for his loved ones and friends. His absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Yet, the memories of his loving nature, his kind deeds, and his selfless ways will continue to inspire and guide us. Zane Oliver Hendrix's story is one of a life well-lived and a legacy of love that will endure for generations to come.
