About Cremation Society of South Carolina – Westville Funerals

At Cremation Society of South Carolina – Westville Funerals, we believe that every life deserves to be honored with meaning, dignity, and reflection. While many view death solely as a time of grief, we guide families to also see it as a moment to celebrate a life lived, preserve memories, and share stories that matter.

We are proud to serve families throughout Greenville, Spartanburg, Greer, Reidville, Taylors, Landrum, and communities across the Upstate of South Carolina, offering full-service funeral, cremation, and memorial planning with transparency, compassion, and professionalism.

About Us

Ever since we opened our gates we have approached life (and death) differently. While some just see the end of a loved one’s life as a time for grief and mourning, we prefer to think of it as a time for reflection, appreciation and even celebration. This is evident in everything we do, from the way we conduct our services to the amenities we choose to offer. We are not a burial ground. We are a close-knit community dedicated to honoring, sharing and preserving the amazing and inspirational stories that are life.

Our two locations are deeply rooted in the Greenville community. Built around 1920, Westville in Greenville's recently revitalized West End began as a high school in the Tanglewood Building. It wasn't until 1925 when the two-story brick building was added and the name changed to Westville. It became a full high school during the 1931-1932 school term, when there was a graduating class of eight! Westville continued as an elementary school until the mid-1960s. In fact many of our expansive meeting rooms were classrooms and offices. The chapel was the school gymnasium and sometimes the dining hall. The building was used as an antiquities shop for a time and later remodeled as a funeral home by the Jones family in the 80's.

We are honored to serve all members of far-reaching communities of the Upstate in such a facility where many young minds of past generations were trained.

The Crematorium located near the ever-expanding downtown was built in 1974, and updated in 1999 as South Carolina's first licensed Crematory Funeral Home and Cremation Society. We've always had our own crematory, and continue to help families with proven support, consistent service, and dignified options.

Our Services Include

  • Traditional funerals and burial services
  • Flame cremation and water cremation (aquamation)
  • Green and natural burial options
  • Life celebrations, memorial services, and personalized ceremonies
  • Catered gatherings, repass services, and reception planning
  • Concierge-level support to guide families through every detail

Our approach blends tradition with innovation—providing modern, flexible options while honoring the values of respect, trust, and community.

A Growing Presence Across the Upstate

As part of our continued commitment to serve more families with excellence and accessibility, we expanded in 2025 into Seneca, South Carolina, establishing Cremation Society of South Carolina – Brown Funerals. This expansion allows us to better serve families throughout Oconee, Anderson, and the Pickens County areas, while maintaining the same standards of care, affordability, and professionalism that define our Greenville location.

Today, our reach extends across the Upstate, ensuring families have access to trusted funeral and cremation services—no matter where they are located.

A Historic Greenville Landmark with Deep Community Roots

Our Westville location, situated in the heart of Greenville’s West End, is a building rich with local history. Originally established in the early 1920s as part of the Tanglewood School, the site evolved into a full high school by the early 1930s, serving generations of Greenville families. Many of the spaces within our funeral home today—our gathering rooms and chapel—once functioned as classrooms, offices, and even a gymnasium.

Over the decades, the building has remained a meaningful part of the community, later transitioning into a funeral home in the 1980s. Today, it stands as a place where history, remembrance, and service come together—continuing its legacy of serving families during life’s most important moments.

Leadership in Cremation, Burial, and Modern Memorialization

Our crematory, originally established in 1974 and modernized in 1999 and expanded in 2025, holds the distinction of being part of one of South Carolina’s earliest licensed crematory funeral operations. Unlike many providers, we have always maintained our own on-site crematory, ensuring that your loved one never leaves our care.

This commitment allows us to provide:

  • Complete transparency and accountability
  • Faster timelines and streamlined arrangements
  • The highest standards of dignity and chain-of-custody care

In addition to traditional services, we are proud to offer innovative options such as water cremation, green burial, and fully customized celebration-of-life experiences designed to reflect each individual’s story.
